CandiTV/Marshalls Pasta RT Dominate the Chas!

3rd May 2009

Russ Downing and his Candi Tv-Marshals Pasta RT team mates, dominated proceedings at the weekend in the Chas Messenger Premier Calendar. Russ finished the race off in style, easily winning the sprint from a four man select group ahead of last weeks Melton winner Ian Wilkinson.

A differing course from the 2008 version faced the team. It’s hilly, heavy roads only favouring strong riders. Some sterling work by the team, whittled the field in half by the time it reached halfway with five riders from the team represented. Russ, James, Malc, Graham and Pete all covered the dangerous moves, giving Russ the chance to save his energy till late.

A crash with three laps remaining took Graham out the race, which also signalled the team into action again. Some big turns by the James and Malc, propelled Pete and Russ into what was to be a 10 man leading group which would fight it out.

With one and half laps remaining some vicious accelerations from Russ whittled it down to four riders, Russ, Kristian House, Ian Wilkinson and Jonathon Tiernan Locke, this proved to be the final selection. Russ controlled every move from here to the finale and added a second consecutive win to the race he also won in 2008.

The team now head towards what proves to be a busy couple of weeks, starting with the Lincoln Grand Prix this weekend.

 Roche on Form in Ulster

Whilst the rest of his team dominated the Chas Messenger, Andy Roche was also showing his form against a tough field in the 3 Day Tour of Ulster. Lying second overall at 5 seconds to Irish rider Martyn Irvine, who was 4 th in last weeks Melton, going into the final day, ended up proving a bit frustrating, with both riders marking each other out the race. However despite 4 th on stage 1, 3 rd on stage 3 and a final overall of 7 th place, Andy’s form is proving to be coming around perfectly for an important period for the team.
